MDMK leader Vaiko along with a few others filed petitions at the Madras High Court to remove seemai karuvelam from the district headquarters that comes under the jurisdiction of the court. District Collectors were included as respondents in the plea. During the initial hearing, the court directed the district administrations to remove seemai karuvelam plants. The court later extended the deadline for completing the task after the district administrations demanded additional time.

Meanwhile, High Court judges also carried out inspections at Madurai and Sivaganga and expressed their displeasure in the way the district administration was handling the situation.

When the case was heard on Monday, the judges came down strongly on the district administrations. They expressed dissatisfaction over the pace in which the removal of seemai karuvelam was transpiring. The Bench said that despite the officials being directed to remove seemai karuvelam plants, the High Court order was not carried out in letter and spirit.  The judges also said that only 10 per cent of the seemai karuvelam plants were removed in the districts and issued two weeks’ time to complete the task. If the order is not implemented, stringent action would be taken against the officials, the judges warned.
