    Ilavarasan’s death closed as suicide

The death of a Dalit youth E Ilavarasan, which had triggered widespread caste unrest in the western districts of the state, has been concluded by the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) as a clear-cut case of suicide, prompting the Madras High Court to close a plea seeking CBI probe in this regard.

The first bench comprising acting Chief Justice Huluvadi G Ramesh and Justice R Mahadevan on accepting the CB-CID report, closed the case.

As per the case, Ilavarasan had eloped with a girl from another community. Thereafter, her father had committed suicide sparking caste row in most of the western districts. Subsequently, an habeas corpus plea was moved and the girl who was produced at the Court chose to go with her mother. Following this, Ilavarasan was found dead on a railway track on July 4, 2013, with Dalit groups alleging it to be a case of murder. However, the then Dharmapuri district Superintendent of Police Asra Garg had filed a report based on certain evidence that it was a case of suicide and not caste murder as alleged by others.

Dalit activists moved the High Court demanding fresh post mortem, judicial inquiry and CBI probe into the death of the youth. After fresh autopsy, the high court handed over the case to the CB-CID.

But on Tuesday, the CB-CID filed a report, stating that Ilavarasan’s body had traces of alcohol and that inquiries with around 65 witnesses confirmed that he was under severe depression after his girlfriend had chosen to go with her mother.

Accepting the CB-CID’s report, the bench cited the post mortem reports backed by other evidence gathered by the investigating agency that it was suicide. It then closed the case saying it did not require any further orders.
