The fishermen said that a group of Sri Lankan fishermen snatched their fishing equipment, including nets weighing around two tonne worth approximately Rs 12 lakh, and around one tonne of their catch. T Govindan (40), a fisherman from Ariya Nattu of Keezha Pattinacherry near Nagore, had ventured into the sea with 10 others in his mechanised boat on February 11.

Early on Saturday, while they were casting their net in Indian waters off Velankanni coast, a group of Sri Lankan fishermen had attacked them.

They claimed that the Indian fishermen were in the Island nation’s territory.

“Even as an argument was going on, suddenly the Sri Lankan fishermen started attacking us with the fishing equipment in their boat. A few of them jumped on to our boat and took away a fishing net weighing around two tonne worth around Rs 12 lakh. Our catch of about one tonne was also taken away by them,” said Govindan.

Meanwhile, the fisheries officials received a written complaint from the fishermen and forwarded it to the department secretary.
