Relief for VAO in namesake goof-up

The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court came to rescue a Village Administrative Officer (VAO) who was wrongly suspended by the Thanjavur district administration. He was mistaken for another VAO with the same name as his. With the court’s intervention, the revenue department revoked the suspension order and allowed him to retire from the service with full benefits.

Petitioner, C Rajendran, from Thanjavur, in his petition, said he had joined as VAO in 1984 and he was supposed to attain superannuation on August 31, 2016. While he was working as VAO of Thiruvisainallur G Rajendran was working as VAO at Pandaravadai.

In one of the property cheating cases Thirunavukarasu was involved along with G Rajendran but district administration had thought that he, the petitioner, was involved in the case and did not allow him to retire. However the investigations conducted by the District Crime Branch showed that G Rajendran was the culprit and not him.

Though he had submitted the Investigation Officer’s report before the district administration and requested it to withdraw all the departmental action taken against him it was not considered. So, the court should quash the suspension order and also direct the administration to allow him to retire, prayed the petition.

When the petition was heard, the court directed Kumbakonam Sub collector to appear before it. He appeared and submitted an order dated October 22, 2016 that the suspension order was revoked and the petitioner was allowed to retire.

Judge, in the order, said it was seen that the petitioner had rendered 32 years of unblemished service and had also received three awards. The suspension on the last date of his service would have definitely caused depression and humiliation in the minds of his colleagues, relatives and friends. Following that the Judge closed the petition as the suspension was revoked.
