The deceased was identified as Mohammed Shah (20), from Kollam, Kerala. Sources said that he was seen sitting on the terrace and talking over his mobile phone on Tuesday night. He was sitting in a corner on the parapet of the terrace.

On seeing that Shah was seated in a dangerous position and was speaking on mobile phone in a careless manner, his friends had cautioned him and asked to sit in a safe position. But, he did not pay heeded to them and continued his conversation.

The last time Shah was seen speaking on the mobile phone was around 11.30 pm and on Wednesday morning he was found dead on the backyard of the hostel by one of the sweepers. The sweeper had immediately informed the hostel warden who in turn alerted the College authorities. On information, police reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem. Police claimed that the nature of injuries it appears that the victim had died after an accidental fall. If a person commits suicide he would have sustained injuries to the legs. But Shah had sustained injuries on his upper limbs which show that it was an accidental fall.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Arun Sakthi Kumar inspected the spot. Speaking to DTNext, the DC claimed that there were two possibilities in the case. One it could have been an accidental fall and another one was that Shah might have been pushed by someone from the terrace. But the second reason seems to be a remote possibility. When people are pushed by someone they would hold on to the person in their bid to resist the attempt and there would be injuries on the fingers. As there were no injuries on the fingers, the present one is a clear case of accidental fall, the DC explained.
