Cops give Rs 66 Lakh to kin of Shankar
Policemen from South Zone have donated Rs 66.31 lakh, collected from department personnel, to the family of Shankar, a constable, who died during security work at jallikattu in Virudhunagar district recently.

The accident occurred on January 23 when Shankar was involved in security duty during the Jallikattu event at Kansapuram near Srivilliputhur. At the event a bull owned by Pandi of W Pudupatti tried to attack a bull tamer Arumugam inside the arena. In the attempt to save Arumugam, Shankar was injured by the bull on his neck and face.
Though he was rushed to Government Hospital in Watrap, he was then referred to Madurai GRH where doctors declared him brought dead. Shankar is survived by his wife Muthusadachi (24) and two children — Gurupandi (2) and Gurusadhana (1).Â
In order to provide compensation to the family, Inspector General of Police (south zone) S Murugan had asked the police personnel in nine southern districts to contribute as per their wish. In the end, police personnel had collected a whopping Rs 66.31 lakh.Â
Contributions include Rs 12.46 lakh from Virudhunagar district, Rs 10.02 lakh from Tirunelveli district. Around Rs 31.31 lakh was deposited in the bank account of Muthusadachi and Rs 10 lakh in fixed deposit of Gurupandi and Gurusadhana’s accounts.
In the presence Deputy Inspector General Anand Kumar Somani and Virudhunagar Superindendent M Rajarajan, Inspector General Murugan gave passbooks to Muthusadachi.
