Medical teams on their toes ensure zero casualty
To everyone’s relief, no single death was reported at Avaniyapuram, where jallikattu was held after two years and the credit goes to the medical teams who were constantly on their toes and gave firstaid to the injured. Those severely hurt were immediately rushed to the hospital.

As soon as the event was inaugurated, the bulls started emerging out of Vadivasal in rage, which were awaited by the eager youths at the entrance. As they attempted to tame bulls, many suffered injuries. According to the final estimate prepared by the Revenue and Health department, 74 people were injured.
Sonai, a participant from Palamedu, was said to be critical as he was injured in his throat. According to staff of medical team, the bull’s horns had entered into his skull. Not just the participants, but some spectators and a few local TV journalists were also injured. An elderly man Rajaram who was standing at a corner of the road suffered injuries in his abdomen.
Similarly, a college student Praveen, who was watching the play at the exit, was injured in his intestine. Some bulls, which had crossed the line ran into the crowd through the bus stand, and injured the spectators. Fifteen medical teams were stationed in the jallikattu venue and 65 volunteers rushed to the rescue of injured bull tamers and audience. Of the 74 injured, 18 had suffered serious injuries and were rushed to hospitals after giving first aid. Eight ambulances were deployed for the purpose.
The medical team comprised doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, workers attached to 108 ambulance service and members of Red Cross. Udayakumar, in-charge of 108 ambulance service, said that it was a challenge to treat the bull tamers as many suffered injuries in their abdomen. For the first time in the history of jallikattu a veterinary ambulance was brought into the arena to carry an injured bull after it came face-to-face with another bull and got into a fight.
No breach of rules witnessed: Madurai Collector
All the rules laid down by the Supreme Court and district administration were followed while conducting jallikattu at Avaniyapuram, said Madurai Collector K Veera Raghav Rao.
At the end of the event, the Collector addressed the gathering and thanked the organisers, bull tamers and the public for extending their support for the smooth conduct of the event. Later, while addressing the media, said that the event started at 8 am and ended at 4 pm. “All the departments including Revenue, Health, Veterinary, Police and Fire and Rescue team worked in close association with each other to make sure that all the rules laid down by the Supreme Court were followed,” he said. There was enough police protection given to the event by Madurai Police Commissioner Shailesh Kumar Yadav, as more than 500 personnel were stationed for security purpose. Two-layered barricades were raised to the height of 8 feet for the protection of spectators. There were enough medical teams and ambulances at the spot to address any kid of emergency. Even two veterinary ambulances were stationed, claimed the Collector.
