4 kg gold seized in 2 incidents in state; 6 from Chennai held

The gold was found concealed in polythene packet and hidden beneath the seats. 

According to airport sources, following a tip off from intelligence sources at Chennai alerted the Tiruchy airport security, who in turn began checking all the passengers of Air India flight bound for Malaysia. 

The DRI officials after seizing the gold identified the duo as Mohammed Sulthan and Mohammed Jamaludeen, both residents of Chennai. While both of them concealed 300 gram gold inside their belongings, the officials seized 724 gram gold beneath from their seats. 

The gold seized from their belongings and beneath the seats together weighed 1.024 grams. Later, both the passengers for further interrogation. 

Meanwhile, the Tiruvallur district police seized 20 gold bars weigh around three kg from four Chennai bound persons travelling by an omni bus with the help of Arambakkam police near Gummidipoondi, during the wee hours of Saturday. 

Following a tip-off that gold bars were smuggled into  Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh on board an omni bus, the DRI sleuths immediately alerted the local police and asked them to check all private buses from Andhra Pradesh. 

A team of police officials, swung into action, and during a search on a luxury bus from AP, found 20 gold bars each weighing 168 grams  in four bags. 

All the four passengers were then taken to the Arambakkam police station for  interrogation. 

The smugglers were identified as Kaja Najeemudeen, Sahabudeen, Jamaludeen and Mohammed Iqbal of Mylapore, Chennai.
