Court blow for Sasikala in FERA case
The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has set aside a trial court order acquitting AIADMK General Secretary V K Sasikala and her nephew T T V Dinakaran in Foreign Exchange Regulations Act (FERA) cases.
Madurai
In his revision petitions filed at the HC, Assistant Director of Enforcement Directorate (ED) claimed the US dollars to the tune of Rs19.92 lakh was deposited in Non Resident Non-Repatriable rupee deposit (NRNR) account of R Susila, a friend of Sasikala in 1994. The amount was brought into India through a private company. Sasikala was one of the stockholders of the firm. The amount was allegedly diverted to Sasikala and her sister-inlaw J Ilavarasi by issuing multiple cheques belonging to another person, who had not obtained any legal bond from the former. It was alleged that the same amount was utilised to purchase various properties.Â
In case of Dinakaran, he had acquired US dollars to the tune of Rs 1.04 crore from persons other than authorised dealers and deposited the same in a private company which was incorporated outside the country without prior permission of Reserve Bank of India thereby contradicting the provisions of FERA.
