According to sources late on Saturday evening, a herd of Gaur had strayed into the field owned by Mathialagan near Thuvarankurichi. Villagers who spotted them tried to chase them. Though the animals started running, a female Gaur accidentally fell into a well. While others in the herd returned to the forests, a male Gaur along with its calf stood near the well. Locals tried to chase them away, but in vain.

However, on Sunday morning, the villagers were shocked when they found the male and the calf too fallen inside the well. The villagers fed them and alerted the forest officials. The officials tried to pull out the trio  but could not succeed in the effort.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, a team of veterinarians, led by Dr Manohar of Anaimalai reserve forest, reached Tiruchy and commenced the rescue operation from 11 am.

The team tranquilised the two adult Gaurs and pulled them out using giant cranes. The calf was then lifted manually with the help of locals.

Once they reached safe ground, the doctors treated them and let them into the forest.
