The government had declared the state drought-hit and even a Central team inspected the extent of loss suffered by the farmers in the state. The team claimed that more than 80 percentage of the crops have failed. The agricultural labourers were now without work and their families were starving. Taking up their cause, farmers’ representatives have been demanding the state to extend the number of working days under the MGNREGS to 150 days as promised by the Chief Minister.

Speaking to DTNext, Varadharajan, state vice president, MDMK farmers wing, said “On December 28, the Chief Minister O Panneerselvam announced that the working days under MGNREGS scheme would be extended to 150 days owning to drought. The Chief Minister must fulfil his word and increase the working days to help agricultural labourers survive.”
