Showers no bar for stir in districts

Ignoring the heavy rain in Delta districts, the youth pressed on with their protest and demanded a permanent amendment to the PCA Act. The rain kept pouring from Friday night onwards. Surprisingly, no one from the gathering moved out and their tempo never came down a bit.

In comparison to the past three days, students in large numbers volunteered to assist the visibly tired police personnel. They wore reflective jackets and started regulating the vehicles struggling to get past the MGR roundabout, the epicentre of protests in Tiruchy. They held tarpaulin sheets to provide relief to those squatting on the road from rain. Umbrellas and raincoats were distributed free of cost.

In Coimbatore, the mild evening showers and the resulting chillness failed to dampen the heat of the pro-jallikattu protests. More than 25,000 people voiced their demand for a permanent solution to the issue. The demand for ban on PETA was predominant. “From the beginning an Ordinance was not our demand. It was not our only demand. Other key demands included a ban on PETA as well,” says R Samyuksha (21).

Protesters burnt the effigy of PETA chief executive officer and raised slogans condemning senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy for his remarks on jallikattu protesters.

Over 100 Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi men forcibly entered Seshasayee Paper Board Ltd. at Pallipalayam in Namakkal on Saturday and staged a protest as owners of the firm are at the helm of affair in PETA in Tamil Nadu.

More than 20,000 students staged protests in Salem. They continued their siege of Bengaluru to Karaikal Passenger Train for the third day. Some of them ransacked the coaches and badly damaged it on Friday night. About 100 transgenders participated in the protests in Salem. Actor director Samuthirakani appreciated protestors near the Salem Collectorate.

Students, children, women and people across age groups carried out protests at various places in The Nilgiris, Tirupur, Erode, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri as well.
