    Deepa to float new party on MGR’s anniversary, says husband

    Former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa Jayakumar will start her new political party on January 17, the birth anniversary of AIADMK founder president and former Chief Minister MGR, according to her husband Madhavan.

    Madhavan told DTNext that ahead of the party launch, Deepa along supporters would take out a procession from Anna Salai to MGR memorial on the Marina. “The party name, flag and symbol will be unveiled there” he added. Asked whether police permission had been sought for the procession, he said “yes, we will be obtaining it.” 

    On Wednesday, a huge crowd turned up at the house of Deepa on Sivagnanam Street in T Nagar to hand over petitions expressing support to her leadership. Madhavan met a majority of them and received their petitions. While women cadre were vocal in their support to Deepa. Coimbatore AIADMK women’s wing vice president M Rajeswari when asked why she had travelled all the way to Chennai, said, “we want Deepa to take over the party as she is the popular choice of all the grassroot workers.”

    H Baskaran from Chennai said “some supporters are noting down the names of the cadre, who are ready to accept the leadership of Deepa and those who are handing over petitions to Madhavan, in a register.” Meanwhile, those supporting Deepa in the districts continued to add new members to the Peravai started recently in her name. 

    Madhavan said names were being entered in the register at the gate. A database would be created and till date the number of supporters have crossed 2 lakh. A similar rush of AIADMK cadre was witnessed at a wedding hall in Woraiyur near Tiruchy on Wednesday, where a meeting of Deepa Peravai was held. 

    A majority of the speakers, while addressing the gathering, said that the party’s first chapter was written by former CM MGR and the second was by the late leader J Jayalalaithaa and the third would certainly be written by her blood relative Deepa. Former MLA K Soundarajan presided over the meeting.

    AIADMK plans 3-day celebration

    AIADMK has planned a three-day celebration across the country between January 17-19 on the occasion of M G Ramachandran’s centenary, said party general secretary V K Sasikala in a release.  Public meetings, cultural programmes and other events would be part of the celebrations by the respective party units.
