Collector cuts water supply to industries
Setting an example in the times of drought, Thoothukudi Collector M Ravi Kumar has banned water supply for large industries from Tamirabarani River.

Tamirabarani river is the major source of water for Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts. There are many drinking water schemes dependent on the river with originates in the western ghats and runs in Tamil Nadu.Â
One among them is the 20 MGD (Million Gallons Per Day) scheme. Through the scheme more than 7.5 crore litres of water from Tamirabarani River were supplied to 25 large companies such as Sterlite, SPIC, Thoothukudi Thermal Power Plant and so on.Â
As there was severe shortage of drinking water in Thoothukudi town and also for irrigation people had been demanding the district administration to stop the supply of water to industries and to supply the water for their daily needs.Â
The Collector, heeding to their demands stopped supply of water to the industries. In the survey carried out in 53 villages in the district more than 95 per cent of the crops had failed, he said in the report to government.Â
