Earthmover to rescue of ‘trapped’ gaur
A fully-grown Indian Gaur that fell into an abandoned septic tank in O’Valley Range of Gudalur Division in the Nilgiris was rescued by the forest department with the help of an earthmover.
Chennai
The muscular male weighing close to a tonne fell into the septic tank in the Barwood area and was noticed by workers in the nearby tea estate. With not much space for the animal to come out of the slippery tank, the animal almost tightly fit in.
Forest personnel brought an earthmover to demolish a portion of the tank’s wall carefully before digging the ground in front of the animal in a tapering manner to help the animal climb out. Though the animal got stuck for a few hours, it made its way out through the slope in less than 20 minutes after the earthmover was deployed.
District Forest Officer of Gudalur P K Dileep said that the animal did not suffer any major injuries and fled into the forest as it was healthy. The department personnel also closed the tank.
