Tiny tots send a desi message via dhoti
School children under the age of 10 adorned the traditional dress of dhotis and shirts to increase awareness about the traditional dresses and to save the livelihood of handloom weavers, at Kovilpatti.

In a function students of Punitha Ohm Convent Matriculation School at Kovilpatti wore dhotis and shirts and stressed the importance of traditional dress. The children wore dhotis to encourage weavers. The function was presided over by Lakshmana Perumal, Registrar of the school, and was inaugurated by Rajesh, Inspector, Kovilpatti West Police station.Â
The function began with the Silambam performed by the students of the same school and then students speaking about the importance of dhotis. One of the students claimed that it is important to wear dhotis as it is the traditional dress of Tamil people and in the modern days most had forgotten about the this eco-friendly attire.Â
Dhoti day is celebrated once in a year on January 6 to make people aware about the importance of dhotis and to wear Khadi dress which in a way would ensure that the livelihood of the handloom weavers would not be affected. Later the students took a pledge to promote awareness about dhotis and other traditional dresses and to support the livelihood of weavers by wearing Khadi dresses. The guests interacted with the students and wished them to continue promoting awareness about traditional dresses in the coming years too.
