Women’s presence less at Poes Garden

While AIADMK party workers have been thronging Poes Garden to ‘convince’ the late CM Jayalalithaa’s aide Sasikala to take over the reins of the party since December 10, the women cadre have been conspicuous by their absence.

While the four women Ministers put in their ‘mandatory’ appearance at Poes Garden, hardly a few local women have come to greet ‘Chinnamma.’ “Men outnumber their female counterparts 99 to 1,” admitted a Poes Garden insider.

“For us Jayalalithaa is the only Amma and nobody else. Why should an unconnected person be forced to take over the party like this?” said Margaret, wife of a party functionary at Adambakkam When asked, AIADMK spokesperson CR Saraswathi said “Women do come to see Chinnamma. On Saturday, there was a large group of women who came from the districts. However, Chinnamma has asked everybody to come only after getting appointments.”

Asked whether an appointment was necessary, Saraswathi was quick to add, “it is only to prevent people from waiting unnecessarily that she has asked them to seek appointments.” Similarly, former AIADMK Minister Gokula Indira said “I was in Poes Garden today (on Sunday) and saw a lot of women there.”

According to political analyst T George, women are more apprehensive about Sasikala as they are still not convinced if she can handle the party with the same charm as Jayalalithaa. “Also, they wonder if she would champion women issues as she has not yet come out with her opinion on any topic so far. Till now, Sasikala has been in the background and suddenly pushing her to the forefront can lead to problems for the party.”

Sasikala Pushpa moves SC for CBI probe into Jaya’s death
Expelled AIADMK MP Sasikala Pushpa has moved the Supreme Court seeking a CBI probe or a judicial investigation by an apex court judge into the death of J Jayalalithaa. In her petition, Pushpa has alleged that Jayalalithaa’s death was “suspicious” as her actual medical condition was not disclosed, no one was allowed to visit her. Moreover, her funeral photographs showed embalming marks and everything from her hospitalisation to her death “was kept under wraps.” The Rajya Sabha MP has sought directions to the Centre, the Tamil Nadu government and Apollo Hospitals, where Jayalalithaa was undergoing treatment, to disclose details of her health report and treatment in a sealed cover to the apex court. A similar plea was filed this week in the apex court by Tamil Nadu Telugu Yuva Sakthi claiming that doubts have been raised over the circumstances of the AIADMK leader’s death and her medical reports needed to be examined by experts.
