Elampillai riots: Police detain over 100 persons

In the late hours of Saturday T. Saravanan (22) of Koneripatty near Elampillai got killed as he was ran over by a goods carrier while trying to escape from the Magudanchavadi Police who tried to stop his bike while checking vehicles. Irked over the incident villagers of Elampillai attacked Inspector Raja Ranaveeran, sub inspector Rajendran and special sub inspector Palanisamy. 

The trio was hospitalised. The protesters also burnt two police bikes and pelted stones at police vehicles, leaving more than 10 police personnel injured. On Sunday evening the police began identifying rioters who attacked the police personnel and damaged public property. The process began with the help of video footage recorded in mobile phones and eye witnesses. 

The police detained 100 villagers on suspicious on Monday morning. In the afternoon PMK functionaries including former MLA Tamilarasu went to the Magudanchavadi police station with the villagers and requested release of detainees who did not have any connection with the riot. The SP of Salem District P Rajan after holding talks with them assured to release innocent villagers. The police said that those against whom they have strong proof will be arrested, produced before the court and lodged in jail under judicial custody.
