“He took a sudden ‘U’ turn on the wrong side of the road to escape from the police who asked him to stop his bike and was mowed by a van,” a senior police officer said. But the agitated villagers claimed that he hit the brakes to stop the vehicle. They held the police personnel on the spot responsible for his death and went on a rampage.

The mob that could not be convinced by the police attacked Magudanchavadi inspector Raja Ranaveeran and Special Sub Inspector Palanisamy. The injured police personnel were taken to a private hospital in Ariyanoor for treatment.

The mob did not stop and burnt two police bikes that were parked in the place where the youth was killed and pelted stones on a few police vehicles. Villagers also did not allow the police to take the youth’s body for autopsy and resorted to a road blockade. The police had to use tear gas and also resort to a ‘lathi’ charge to disburse the mob. A few hundred police personnel from nearby districts were mobilised to bring the situation under control.

Superintendent of Police (SP) of Salem District P Rajan and Sankagiri Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) Paul Princely Rajkumar rushed to the spot and initiated peace talks with the villagers. The villagers alleged that the police harassed them in the pretext of vehicle check.

Many bikers have fallen from their bikes when they were stopped suddenly by the police, they alleged. Later the villagers allowed the body to be taken to the Salem Government Super Specialty Hospital, where an autopsy was performed on Sunday. After the autopsy, final rites were performed amid tight security on Sunday. Inspector General of Police (IG) West Zone A. Pari said that the situation was under control.

“A case has been registered against the assaulters for preventing policemen from discharging their duty and for assaulting them.
