It is said, the crew of nine fishermen from Akaraipettai in Nagapattinam district had ventured into sea on December 8 in a mechanised boat owned by V Malathy (38) of Akkaraipettai and were fishing in the Nagai coast, roughly 70 nautical miles away. On Sunday late night, when the crew continued to fish, the weather turned. The fishermen felt the extraordinary wobbling of their mechanised boat due to the effect of Cyclone Vardah. Suddenly, the steel rope behind the wheelhouse, used to drag the fishnet snapped and the roller hit V Rajangam (55) of Akkaraipettai, R Thangarasu (50) of Keechankuppam, V Edumpan (43) of Akkaraipetti and R Pradeep (25) of Velippalayam and they fell, losing their balance. Rajangam died on the spot while the others sustained injuries.

Subsequently, the men raced to the shore and the injured were rushed to the Nagapattinam Government Hospital while the body of Ragangam was sent to the GH for treatment. On information, the Nagai police along with the Coastal Security personnel rushed to the shore and held investigations.
