    Shut down explosives unit: MUMI

    Demanding to permanently shut down the private explosives factory, which was recently involved in an accident, located at T Murungapatti in Thuraiyur, members of Makkal Urimai Meetpu Iyakkam (MUMI) submitted a petition to the district collector.

    Several members of MUMI converged at the district collectorate with a petition regarding the recent accidental explosion of PETN production unit located in T Murungapatti village in Thuraiyur taluk of the district. In the petition, they mentioned that the explosives factory had already caused a lot of damage to the soil and had also polluted the ground water badly. “The locals had approached the respective tahsildhar a couple of times and have submitted petitions to remove the factory from there for which the block level officials did not respond. Now, one of the units of the factory exploded accidentally in which 19 workers who were inside the plant were killed and several other injured. The petitioners came up with four demands to the district administration of which immediate shut down of the factory was proposed as the most important one. Further, the petitioners had also asked the district administration to take necessary actions to grant government jobs to at least one family member of each of the 19 victims. They demanded to permanently shut down similar explosives units located in other parts of district.
