City advanced to the last-four stage courtesy of its 1-0 first-leg win at the Etihad Stadium last week. At a fully-packed Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, the home team struggled to find the net, managing only three attempts on target.

Atletico was forced to play the last few minutes with 10 men after its centre-back Felipe was sent off for accumulating two yellow cards. The Brazilian, who had been booked earlier, was shown the marching orders when he kicked City’s Phil Foden.

The match ended after 12 minutes of stoppage time, before which the host had a few chances to score but failed to capitalise on them. Antoine Griezmann, Rodrigo De Paul and Matheus Cunha came close to finding the back of the net in the second half.

City had one of the best chances in the first period as Ilkay Gundogan hit the post from close range.

Liverpool into last-4

Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp opted to rest the stars and saw his back-ups play out a wild 3-3 draw with Benfica on Wednesday to wrap up a 6-4 aggregate win.

Central defender Ibrahima Konate, one of the scorers in Liverpool’s 3-1 triumph in the opening leg, netted another header for the first goal while Roberto Firmino added two for the home side at Anfield. Goncalo Ramos had made it 1-1 on the night, but Liverpool never looked like squandering its big advantage even though Roman Yaremchuk and Darwin Nunez scored for the visitor in the second half.
