Winning start for Chennai City
Chennai City FC (CCFC) made a winning start to its I-League 2021 campaign with a come-from-behind 2-1 success over southern rival Gokulam Kerala FC (GKFC) at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Saturday.

Serbian Elvedin Skrijelj (27’) and Vijay Nagappan (49’) netted a goal each for Chennai City, which initially went behind to a Denny Antwi (3’) strike. CCFC got the job done without head coach Satyasagara in the dugout as the Singaporean served a ban for receiving a sending off in the club’s last match in the 2019-2020 season.
Gokulam Kerala got off to a dream start in its opener. Ghanaian forward Antwi put the ball in the back of the net in the third minute following a corner. Chennai City drew parity just before the first drinks break after centre-forward Demir Avdic was brought down in the box.
Elvedin stepped up to take the resulting spot-kick and made no mistake as both teams were locked 1-1 at the half-time break. CCFC found the winning goal in the 49th minute via Vijay, who played a good one-two with Avdic. Despite pressure from GKFC, Chennai City held onto its one-goal advantage and earned the three points. It is to be noted that two staff from the CCFC set-up tested positive for COVID-19 and didn’t play a part from the sidelines.
