A struggling Australia is prepared to risk playing seasoned opener David Warner in the third Test against India even if he is not 100 per cent fit, said assistant coach Andrew McDonald on Thursday.

The third Test is scheduled to be played in Sydney between January 7 and 11. In the absence of Warner, who was recovering from a groin muscle tear, Australia’s batting failed miserably in the first two matches. “That is a real, clear option. Coming off an injury, he may not be 100 per cent fit. You never know until you get out there,” said McDonald.

“Look, if he is fit enough to go out there and perform his duties for the team, I am sure that the coach will have a conversation with him. Most times, head coach Justin Langer is pretty open with the players in terms of giving them accountability.”

Warner has been named in the squad along with Will Pucovski for the third Test as Australia looks to bounce back from the eight-wicket loss in the Boxing Day game here. McDonald said that Warner is optimistic about making a comeback in Sydney.

“Warner is optimistic that he will be ready to go, which is great news for us. We are excited to have him back. I am sure that even he is excited to come back into the group. There is nothing worse than being injured when you are at the top of your game,” added McDonald.

Pucovski, too, is set for a potential debut after the youngster suffered a concussion in the first warm-up match against the Indians earlier this month. “He will be put through tests. If he comes through, he will make himself available potentially for the opening slot. It is good to have a little bit of depth out there.”

One of the biggest setbacks for the Aussies has been a rare slump in form for Steve Smith, who has so far scored only 10 runs in four innings. “I wouldn’t be too quick to be judging Smith for not looking good in the middle. He looks pretty solid and is hitting the ball well at the nets,” said McDonald.
