Popular Tamil cricket commentator in 1980s and 90s, SM Abdul Jabbar, who commanded a huge fan following, passed away on Tuesday. He was 81.
Chennai
Born on June 26, 1939 at Sathankulam in Tuticorin district, Jabbar, was a Tamil radio broadcaster, cricket commentator and a writer.Â
A distinct voice that dissected the Gentleman’s game in pure Tamil, he was immensely popular among cricket-lovers in the state.Â
During his younger days, he regularly listened to radio, the only medium of entertainment then. The Test matches during Pongal festival were incomplete without his voice.
In late 1990s, he even commentated for matches in BBC Tamil and ESPN.
The Tamil Nadu cricketing fraternity condoled his demise.
