While the IPL of 2020 is not yet over, talks about the 2021’s edition’s auctions have already started as Chennai Super King's future squad depends on the same. CSK has completed a bad campaign by becoming the first team to be eliminated from the Indian Premier League 2020.

As their campaign came to an early end, MS Dhoni laid out the plans for his team for 2021. "A lot depends on what the BCCI decides on the auction. We need to slightly change our core group and look for the next ten years. At the start of the IPL, we made a team and it served well for us. There comes a time where you have to shift a bit, change a bit and hand it over to the next generation. That's what will be the policy, try to form a strong core group", he said.

It has been expected that the likes of Kedhar Jadhav, Piyush Chawla, Karn Sharma and Murali Vijay could be released by the franchise. Moreover, Shane Watson has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Collectively, the future squad depends purely on next year's mega auction. This has raised concern as there were reports that the IPL 2021 mega auction would not be held due to COVID19. However, according to recent reports, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said, "We haven't decided anything yet. Let this season conclude, we will take a call".

Ganguly also said that the next year's season might take place in India if COVID19 was under control and vaccination comes to play.
