Didn’t expect to get maiden India call-up, says Varun Chakravarthy

Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who is currently on Indian Premier League (IPL) duty with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), was on cloud nine after earning his maiden India call-up for the T20I series against Australia later this year.

Chennai-based Varun was rewarded for his consistent performances in the ongoing IPL in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where he is the joint fourth-highest Indian wicket-taker with 13 scalps. “I am really short of words. Getting an India call-up is definitely a big thing. I wasn’t expecting it,” Varun said in a video posted by BCCI TV.

“I really didn’t know what was happening around me. I am not much active on social media,” added the 29-year-old. Varun, who bagged a five-wicket haul against Delhi Capitals (DC) last Saturday, was involved in the game between Kolkata and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) on Monday when the squad was announced for the series Down Under.

“I came to know about it once the match was over. I know that I keep using the same word again and again, but it is a surreal feeling. My basic goal was to play regularly for KKR and contribute to the team’s wins. I hope that I have done well so far. Hopefully, I perform for the Indian team as well,” said Varun.

The slow bowler expressed gratitude to the national team selectors for picking him in the 16-man squad. “I just want to thank all the selectors who have kept faith in me. I have no words. Thank you so much. Also, it is good news for my family.” Varun’s Tamil Nadu teammate Washington Sundar has also made the cut for the T20I team.
