Presence of senior players could give CSK an edge, says Hussey

Scheduled in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) amidst the coronavirus pandemic, the 13th edition of IPL will be organised in a never-seen-before environment. To ensure safety to those involved, bio-bubbles have been created, and matches in the initial phase of the competition will be held behind closed doors.

“It is a real challenge for all the players and support staff. It is something we have never experienced before. We have got to adapt,” Hussey said in a video that was posted on various social media platforms on Wednesday.

“I think that is where CSK has got a little bit of an advantage. We have experienced players who understand their own game. They understand themselves better than some of the younger guys. We have got to look out and help each other. We have to hope that we can mentally deal with it,” added the former Australia batsman.

As 13 members of the travelling party, including two players, tested positive for COVID-19 a couple of weeks back, Super Kings had a delayed start to its IPL 2020 preparations. MS Dhoni-led CSK, with a depleted squad, hit the nets for the first time only last Friday. However, 45-year-old Hussey said that the side is on the right track. “We had a bit of a dodgy start; we had to quarantine a little longer. But now, the boys are actually looking good. They are getting rid of the rustiness, and are in good form. I expected them to be rustier, but they are in good shape. I am really impressed with their approach to training. Hopefully, we can take that form onto the field,” explained Hussey.

Although the CSK camp was hit hard by the deadly virus upon arrival in Dubai, Hussey is positive about staying safe from here on. “We have got a very good bubble around us. I think we are well protected. Whenever we have our COVID-19 tests, I get a little bit nervous. But, I am confident as we have a very good structure around us. If we stick to the rules, we should be absolutely fine,” he added.
