In its opening game of the season, CCFC pipped debutant TRAU FC 1-0 courtesy a second half strike from Spaniard Adolfo ‘Fito’ Miranda. Although captain Pedro Manzi and Fito had a number of chances in the first weekend, they lacked the cutting edge in front of goal. Coming on the back of an eight-day break, one would expect Chennai City to have regrouped.

With a host of local players making it to the squad for the first time, head coach Akbar Nawas said the side is working on a few areas. "We have to continue to improve our game in every match we play. It's always a learning curve for us," Akbar told reporters on the eve of the contest.

Punjab has only a solitary point to show from its first two fixtures, having lost 0-3 to Churchill Brothers and drawn 1-1 against East Bengal. PFC led for most part of the East Bengal clash, but was denied three points because of a late equaliser from Juan Mera Gonzalez.

Looking forward to hosting the holder, Punjab head coach Yan Law said, "The boys are confident and we are not going to make the same mistakes we made in the last few matches. We are not worried about CCFC’s attack. We have quality defenders in our team and they have worked very hard for this game. We are striving for three points.”
