With the tournament in Russia drawing ever closer, Southgate is eager to get his players focused by ensuring that they can work effectively together.

Stars such as Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Marcus Rashford took part in the exercise during training, which saw players split into different groups. The England players appeared a little bemused by the game at first but they soon got used to it and it ended up being a competitive session.

England faces Nigeria at Wembley on Saturday in the first of two warm-up fixtures prior to the tournament, with a game against Costa Rica at Elland Road to follow next week. Southgate will hope that this exercise will lead to increased morale in the camp as the players get ready for Russia.

For the game against Nigeria, Southgate has the vast majority of his squad available, meaning he can assess the various options available to him ahead of the World Cup.

However, he will be without the services of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson, who featured in Liverpool's Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid last weekend.
