SRM University retains John Memorial Trophy
SRM University defended its title successfully as it completed a convincing win over Tamil Nadu Police in the final of the P John Memorial volleyball tournament at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Sunday.

The defending champion won with a scoreline of 25-17, 25-18, 2515 in the title decider. By virtue of the victory, SRM University retained the P John Memorial Trophy and also a received a cash award of Rs 1 lakh. SRM, which finished runner-up to Income Tax in the state-level championship, got past the final hurdle without much fuss.Â
Runner-up Tamil Nadu Police took home a cash price of Rs 75,000. In third-place play-off match, Karnataka defeated Integral Coach Factory. Karnataka and ICF got Rs 50,000 and Rs 30,000 respectively.Â
Bharath (Best blocker), Swaminathan (Best attacker), Hariharan (Best setter), Angamuthu (Best Universal and Mithun Kumar (Best Libero) received Rs 5000 each as they emerged as the best players of the tournament in the men’s category.Â
SRM got off the blocks in fine fashion as it controlled the proceedings right from the start of the first set, enabling it to finish the final in straight sets. It didn’t suffer a hiccup at any point of time as it had a considerable advantage over its opponents throughout the course of the match. It won the first and second sets with scorelines of 25-17 and 25-18.
TN Police’s chances were hampered by some wayward service at the start of the third set. SRM had a four-point advantage going into the set’s first time-out at 139. The lead only widened courtesy some brilliant serves from SRM which helped it win the match in straight sets, by getting a 25-15 win in the third set.Â
