Bavuma, SA bowlers grind Aussies
South Africa tightened its nose around Australia by reducing it to 110 for six at close of play on the second day of the fourth Test here on Saturday.
Johannesburg
Earlier, Temba Bavuma ran out of partners just five runs short of what would have been a deserving second Test century as Pat Cummins removed the last two South African wickets in consecutive balls to finish with 5 for 83 as the home side were bowled out for 488 on the stroke of tea.Â
Temba Bavuma silenced the doubters with a memorable unbeaten 95 that catapulted South Africa to their biggest score since the 573 for four declared against Bangladesh last October.Â
Alongside Keshav Maharaj’s career-best 45 in a ninth-wicket stand worth 76, Bavuma battered an already black and blue Australian attack with an expertly paced innings. Bavuma later climbed through the gears but was left stranded when both Maharaj and Morne Morkel edged behind to hand Cummins his fourth career five-wicket haul.Â
Usman Khawaja made 53 off 83 balls but the Australian top order could not handle the SA bowlers. Vernon Philander took three wickets and Rabada had one as Australia struggled to make a match of it.Â
BRIEF SCORES: South Africa (1st innings) 488 all out (A Markram 152, T Bavuma 95, P Cummins 5/83); Australia 110 for 6 (U Khawaja 53, V Philander 3/17)Â
