Bengaluru widens lead at the top after Derby win
Chennaiyin FC’s hopes of closing the gap on table-topper Bengaluru FC went up in smoke as the home side slid to a 1-3 defeat to the former I-League champion in an Indian Super League match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Tuesday.

Goals from Boithang Haokip, Miku and Sunil Chhetri sealed the three points for the visitor in the ‘Battle of the blues’, helping it hold a seven-point lead over second-placed CFC.
Indian international Chhetri killed the game off in added time as he slotted a goal into the net which was guarded by just one defender after goalkeeper Karanjit Singh charged off the line to stop Udanta Singh.
BFC reinstated its one goal lead in the 63rd minute when goalkeeper Karanjit Singh spilled a shot off skipper Sunil Chhetri, which fell kindly in the path of Venezuelan Miku who tapped it in.
Chennaiyin was left with ten men for the last 19 minutes as its captain Henrique Sereno was sent off for accumulating two yellow cards, the second one of which was for his foul on Miku near the mid-way line.
Centre forward Jeje Lalpekhlua had a wonderful opportunity to equalise from a penalty in the 76th minute after Harmanjot Khabra brought down local lad Dhanpal Ganesh inside the 18-yard-box. But a poor spot-kick meant CFC had to once again hunt for an equalising goal in the final phase of the game.
