TN languishes at the bottom of the table

A collective bowling effort led by Kanishk Seth, followed by a 95-run partnership between Sudip Chatterjee and Writtick Chatterjee, helped Bengal to an emphatic seven-wicket victory against defending champion Tamil Nadu in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament.

Seth’s three wickets up front set the foundation for a strong bowling performance which restricted Tamil Nadu to 129 for 9. Sudip then anchored the reply with an unbeaten 51. Writtick fell for 44 in the closing stages of the chase, but that didn’t stop the side from cantering to 134 for 2 with 3.4 overs to spare.

Chasing a modest total, Bengal didn’t have an ideal start, losing Shreevats Goswami first ball. Vivek Singh and Sudip then steadied things with a 32-run stand. After Vivek’s dismissal for 21, Sudip was joined by Writtick and the duo worked in tandem to rapidly take the game away from Tamil Nadu. Sudip’s 47-ball knock was built around six fours, while Writtick hit five fours in his 32-ball knock.

In the afternoon, Seth didn’t take long to make an impact with his left-arm seam after Tamil Nadu opted to bat. He removed Bharath Shankar and B Aparajith cheaply. Washington Sundar and Vijay Shankar put on 21 before Sheth struck again to see the back of Washington.

Wickets continued to fall at an alarming rate, and when Shankar was dismissed for 27, Tamil Nadu was struggling at 75 for 6. However, S Anirudha then scored an enterprising 26-ball 37, receiving support from M Ashwin (14) in a 48-run partnership from 45 balls. Anirudha’s knock, which contained three fours and a six, was the top score for his side.

Seth was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3 for 26. Sayan Ghosh and Aamir Gani chipped in with two wickets apiece. With two wins from four games, Bengal has collected eight points to climb third on the points table, while Tamil Nadu has been pushed to the last spot with a solitary win from three matches.
