BCCI U-23: Tamil Nadu loses again
Tamil Nadu suffered a second consecutive loss as it lost to Kerala by 21 runs in the BCCI U-23 South Zone one-day tournament here on Monday.
Chennai
Chasing 242 for its first win, TN finished its innings at 220 for nine. It was Kerala’s second win in as many days after it beat Hyderabad in its first match. Similar to its defeat to Andhra on Sunday, TN captain J Kousik won the toss and opted to bowl.Â
The match was reduced to 49 overs a side because of delayed start. The host bowlers put on a much better display, especially the lanky pacer T Ajith Kumar who took four for 53 on his debut. For Kerala, opener Rohan Kunnumal top-scored with 80.Â
Much was expected from the robust TN top order but it failed to deliver. It lost three early wickets when captain Kousik joined hands with the in-form Pradosh Ranjan Paul. But its suicidal running did its cause no good as Kousik was involved in a terrible mix-up with Pradosh to lose his wicket with the score on 101.Â
R Kavin, on whom lay a lot of hopes, was also out in the same fashion and at 114 for five, it seemed that the contest was over. But Pradosh (65) and M Abhinav resurrected the innings with a brisk 53run stand for the sixth wicket. When it looked like the duo had steadied the ship, TN received a double jolt losing both set batsmen Pradosh and Abhinav in the space of a couple of overs.Â
Towards the end, Ashwath Mukunthan hit a few lusty blows in his knock of 24 but that only delayed the inevitable. Tuesday is a rest day and when action resumes on Wednesday, TN faces Goa in what will effectively be a must-win game.
