Local lad Dhanpal Ganesh smashed his first goal in Indian Super League history as Chennaiyin FC defeated its South Indian rival at the Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday.

“I am really happy to have scored my first goal for Chennaiyin FC against a champion team like Bengaluru FC. I am speechless now,” said an exuberant Ganesh after opening his goal-scoring account in ISL.
Three out of Chennaiyin’s four wins have come from winners past the 80-minute mark. Skipper Henrique Sereno bagged a goal against FC Pune City while Jeje Lalpehklua had one in stoppage time against two-time champion ATK.
Ganesh scored a dramatic late goal in the 88th minute for the visitor against BFC courtesy of an impressive header off a Rene Mihelic freekick.
Commenting on it, the 23-year-old said, “Scoring goals in the later stages of games has been our team’s strength. We knew we could get the winner in spite of BFC scoring the equaliser.”
Ganesh was grateful to the CFC fans who made their presence felt at the ‘South Indian derby’. He added, “We had hundreds of fans travelling from Chennai to cheer us. They gave me the feel of a home match here (Kanteerava Stadium). I dedicate my goal to all the travelling fans who were present here. Without them, it wouldn’t have been possible.”
When queried about his ‘special’ goal celebration, he said, “That was just to convey the message that my wife is pregnant. I have never spoken about it to others before. I was waiting for such an for an opportunity to deliver such a celebration.”
Earlier, striker Jeje scored the opener for Season 2 winner CFC while the former I-League champion pegged back in the 85th minute with a goal from skipper Sunil Chhetri.
