Madurai swimmer makes big splash
A 14-year-old junior swimmer from Madurai made a big splash at the recently concluded 9th Asian Games Age-Group Swimming Championship in Uzbekistan by bagging two individual medals. The champion swimmer, Vickas participated in the Asian Age-Group Games held at Uzbekistan between September 8 and 11 in which swimmers from 47 countries participated.

From India there were 38 swimmers and from Tamil Nadu there were five. In the Asian Games, India bagged 5 gold, 13 silver and 22 bronze medals. Tamil Nadu had bagged 1 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals. Vickas participated in all the events and bagged four medals in total, including two individual bronze medals.
In the 4x100 metres freestyle relay, Indian team won gold medal and Vickas was part of the team. Similarly in the 4x100 metres medley relay, Vickas won silver medal for India. Apart from the team events, he had also won two bronze medals in 50 metres and 100 metres freestyle events. On his arrival in Madurai on Friday night, Vickas was given a rousing welcome at the airport.
On Saturday morning, Aquatic Association Madurai had organised a grand event in which Vickas was taken in a chariot. Vickas, while addressing the media, said that he had started swimming at the age of five and at the State championships held in the years 2010, 2011 and 2012 at Chennai, he bagged the Individual championship titles.
“In 2013 at the National swimming championship event held at Goa I set a new national record in 200 metres IM event in 2.46 seconds” said Vickas. Last year he had participated in 60 tournaments and had bagged 150 medals. Vickas thanked his parents, Prabakar and Rajapriya, for their constant support and encouragement.
