Foreign racers have a whale of a time in Coimbatore

Starting with their cars and race track to the people here and climate, everything was different for 21-year-old racers Paolo Ippolito of Italy and Ricky Capo of Australia who had participated in the first round of the JK Tyre FMSCI National Racing Championship 2017 in Euro JK 17.

Talking to DTNext they said it is an experience they would relish as they quickly learnt a lot and showed a lot of improvement in the races that were conducted this weekend as they finished fourth and fifth in the final race held on Sunday evening.

Interestingly it was their first visit to India and also the first LGB4 Race for the Kart Racers. Paolo said everything is different in Europe where he has been racing for 10 years.

Among the most important difference was the climate. “It used to go up to 28 degree Celsius in Italy. While the climate here is not too high compared to home the humidity here is definitely way too high. It makes the temperature in the car much higher,” he observed.

“My sponsor asked if I would like to give a try for the championship here and I readily accepted,” he said and added that it was worth giving the try. Determination could with positive thinking helped him take the challenges and give a tough fight for the more than a dozen Indian drivers. Among the difference he observed that the Kart is much smaller than the F-4 cars.

“So I had a tough time timing the gaps. The car here too was much different. Other drivers gave a tough fight and are really cool off the track,” he said and was hopeful of coming to the same track for the second round in August. Ricky who has been racing for 14 years said that the major difference he had was the smaller laps.

“The last track I raced there was 14 kms. It is just 2 kms here and it made it easy for me to memorize the track,” he chuckled. But it was not that easy as he felt that the track here was also a little bumpy and challenging for the driver. The Australian found it challenging to cope with the vehicle too as he found it to be having a less down force and break horse power, resulting in more dependence on the tyre and the mechanical grip.

“It is all the more important to stay hydrated till the end of the race,” he said. Ricky could not finish his first race due to technical snag in the car. In the second and third races he finished 8th and 6th and continued improving to the 5th spot in the last race on Sunday.

Anticipating to be here for the second to fourth rounds of the championship he is confident of making it to the podium in those events. “I would recommend by friends there to give a try to this championship,” he added.
