I wanted to make hay while the sun shines: Karun Nair
India’s Karun Nair is in exalted company. He surpassed the likes of Zaheer Abbas, Brain Lara, Rohan Kanhai to register his 303 as the third highest maiden hundred ever scored in the history of the game. After sweating it out in the Chennai heat for more than nine-and-a-half hours, Nair took time out to elaborate on his marvellous feat.
Chennai
On when the 300 took shape in his mind:
It never took place in my mind. Once I crossed 250, the team management had certain plans of going after the bowling and declaring. So, I think within the space of five overs I got to 280-285 and that's when I started thinking of 300. Credit to Jaddu who kept egging me on to not throw it away and get to the landmark.
On whether batting in all-formats (Test, ODI and T20) helps:
It's just playing normally. After you score 100 the pressure is off. You just go out there and play the shots that you can and you just look to hit the gaps. Once you cross 150, it is just playing freely like how you always do and just expressing yourself.
On whether he broke England's spirits?
They say make hay when the sun shines. I wasn't thinking much about it. We are 3-0 up, so they are already out of the game. I don't know how they are feeling right now. I'm just happy that I got the runs and made the most of it (the opportunity).
On whether he was under pressure before the game
No extra pressure at all. There is always pressure in every game. I got run out in the first game and didn't get many runs in the second but there was no extra pressure that I put on myself.
On whether he was nervous on 99, 199, 299:
Obviously, there are some nerves going on. You can't be thinking negative at that point. You should watch the ball and just get over that moment. You have to feel that moment, being there.
On the mood in the dressing room:
Everyone's being very cheerful. Everyone's being very nice to me, they have congratulated me. I think it'll take a couple of days for it to sink in. The dressing room atmosphere has always been good. Everyone has always backed me in whatever I have done.
On playing more sweep shots:
I have played the sweep shot almost all my life. You do have to practise a lot. You should work hard at it. It is my go-to shot whenever I need some boundaries. If the gaps are open for it, I go for it.
