England’s second successive defeat was followed by the news that they have been forced to call up two new players because of the string of injuries running through the camp.

Durham’s South African-born opening batsman Keaton Jennings will replace the unfortunate Hameed, who badly broke a finger at the start of the third Test.

Jennings, son of former South Africa coach Ray Jennings, had a prolific breakthrough season in the first division of the county championship last summer when he scored 1,548 first division runs at an average of 64.

The Johannesburg-born Jennings, whose mother is from Sunderland, captained South Africa’s Under 19s five years ago but through in his lot with England after being recommended to Durham by Albie Morkel.

Now the left-hander, who hit seven centuries last summer and came close to selection for England’s India tour ahead of Ben Duckett, will join up with England next Monday when they begin preparations in Mumbai for the fourth Test.

Hampshire’s left-arm spinner Dawson is called up after Zafar Ansari’s back injury forced him out of the tour and he too will arrive in Mumbai next Monday after spending time both with the Lions and in the Bangladesh Premier League.
