India top group beating Malaysia
India held off a stiff resistance from Malaysia and scored a 2-1 win to top the group in the Asian Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament here on Wednesday. Rupinder Pal Singh scored both the goals for India.
Malaysia, with nine points, have one more match to go. while India have completed their engagements with 13 points The top four teams advance to the semi-finals In a fast-paced first quarter, both the teams played attacking hockey. The Indians had the better of the exchanges as their midfield played with pace and the forwards did a great job in unsettling the Malaysian defence.
India got two penalty-corners and after the second Rupinder Pal Singh put them ahead with an opportunistic goal. His first attempt hit the framework and came back and Rupinder pounced on the rebound and scored in the 11th minute.
The Malaysians attacked right from the first minute in the second quarter and earned their first penalty-corner which led to the second immediately. Razie Rahim converted the penalty-corner for Malaysia’s equaliser. India pressed but could not get the wining goal until two minutes from close when Rupinder converted a penalty-corner.Â
