Vaishali stays on top in women's national chess
Tamil Nadu’s emerging talent R Vaishali continued her good performance in the National Women Challengers Chess Championship to keep herself in the lead with 4.5 points at the end of the fifth round at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium on Monday.

Sharing the lead with Vaishali with 4.5 points were Vijayalakshmi Subbaraman (AI), trying to make a comeback in the premier nationals, former National champions Swati Ghate (LIC) and Soumya Swaminathan (PSPB).
Vaishali held Soumya Swaminathan to a draw on the top board in the fifth round while Swati Ghate defeated top seed Eesha Karavade of PSPB, who slipped to 14th position after the defeat. In a battle of youth vs experience, Vijayalakshmi accounted for rising star Michelle Catherina.
Bala Kannamma of TN shocked fourth seed Pratyusha Bodda of AP while Divya Lakshmi held Nisha Mohota of PSPB to a draw. M Mahalakshmi, Pon S Krithika, Bala Kannamma, Priyanka K, J Saranya (TN), Lasya G (AP), Kiran Manisha Mohanty (LIC), Srija Seshadri (Delhi) and Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB) were in second position with four points each.
