Alisha all set to take racing closer to women

Chennai racer Alisha Abdullah recorded a first of sorts when she became the first woman racer from the country to sizzle on the race track in both super bikes and cars. Adding another feather to her cap, Alisha is all set to take the male dominated sport closer to women by introducing an all-woman race in the national championship.

Alisha is all set to start scouting for women racers from various colleges in the city from this month. “My target is to reach out to as many women as possible who are interested in motorsport but they don’t have the means to pursue it. I will be starting with 100 college girls and will filter them to a final 25 based on their skills and performance in training. They will compete in the national championship in June,” said Alisha.

The all-women grid of 25 racers would compete in the national championship for the first time in the country and with the support of the Madras Motorsport Club, Alisha is planning to take the racers on a training session to the Buddh International Circuit in Noida.

The Chennai racer is astonished to find a number of enthusiasts for the sport. “I have six girls from various parts of the county. I am surprised to see entries come from smaller cities like Tiruchy and Salem. It shows the potential motorsport has in the country,” Alisha added.

Alisha said a lot has to be done to make the sport affordable to many. “We still haven’t invested the required time and money in motorsport. The foremost thing is to get a recognition from the government. It would be a shot in the arm for the sport if we can get the backing of the government and sponsors will follow,” she added.
