Sania, Paes face off in mixed doubles
Padma Bhushan winner Sania Mirza and Leander Paes will face off in the mixed doubles quarterfinals of the Australian Open on Wednesday.
Melbourne
Sania Mirza and Croat Ivan Dodig, seeded top, sailed past the unseeded Kazakh-Pakistani duo of Yaroslava Shvedova and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi 7-5 6-2 on Tuesday while Paes and Sania’s women’s doubles partner Martina Hingis hammered the American-Dutch pair of Sloane Stephens and Jean-Julien Rojer 6-1 6-2.Â
Martina Hingis and Leander Paes won 89% of the points on their first serve in the first set and 67% on their second serve. They converted all three break point opportunities that came their way to eventually seal the set 6-1.Â
The second set was no different as the pair seemed in no mood to relent, as they won 67% of their first serve points and 44% of their second serve points and despite serving more number of unforced errors in the second set (4) to 1 of their opponents, romped home to a 6-2 set win to book their place in the quarterfinals.
