Milos Raonic Stuns Stan Wawrinka
Milos Raonic fended off a spirited comeback from the fourth seed Stan Wawrinka to send the 2014 champion tumbling out of the fourth round of the Australian Open 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-3 on Monday.
Melbourne
The 25-year-old Canadian, who had never beaten the French Open champion in four previous meetings, sent down 24 aces and hit 82 winners in the three-hour, 44-minute contest to reach the quarter-finals for the second year in a row.Â
Swiss Wawrinka fought back from losing the first two sets to force a decider but was unable to avoid exiting a grand slam before the quarter-finals for the first time since the 2014 French Open. After belting 24 aces and 82 winners, Raonic will now need to back up the 3 hours and 45 minutes spent on court when he faces flamboyant Frenchman Gael Monfils, a four-set winner over Russian Andrey Kuznetsov earlier in the day. Raonic sealed the victory with a simple volley at the net.
"When you play a top guy like Milos, it’s difficult. You need to be 100 percent to have a chance to beat him. Unfortunately, I’ve been sick since 10 days now," says Stan Wawrinka, Swiss tennis player.Â
Vika refuses to look back:Â
Fourteenth-seeded Victoria Azarenka beat No. 48thranked Barbora Strycova 6-2, 6-4 to clinch a spot in the quarterfinals against No. 7 seed Angelique Kerber. Â The two-time Australian Open champion beat Barbora Strycova 6-2, 6-4 in the fourth round Monday -- continuing a three-year sequence of wins against the Czech player, which started in the second round in 2013 and included the third round last year.Â
Kerber wins all-German battle:Â
Angelique Kerber has cemented her place in the last eight of the Australian Open with a hard-fought 6-4 6-0 victory in an all-German affair against Annika Beck. Despite a lopsided scoreline, it was certainly no easy feat for the world No.7, who was pushed by Beck early on in a competitive display on Rod Laver Arena. With both women strong on their returns, it was a classic case of match being played in two contrasting halves.Â
Monfils leaps into quarters:Â
Gael Monfils has dived headfirst into his first Australian Open quarterfinal with an entertaining 7-5 3-6 6-3 7-6(4) victory over Andrey Kuznetsov. At 3-2 in the second set, the acrobatic Frenchman became airborne as he leaped, racquet-first, to reach a wide forehand at the back of the court. The return missed but the sheer ridiculousness of the attempt embodies everything that endears Monfils to fans around the world.Â
