While there were reports that actor Arvind Swamy has been roped in to play the role of former Chief Minister MG Ramachandran in the film, we hear from a reliable source that Prakash Raj has been signed to play Kalaignar Karunanidhi’s character in the film.

A source in the know of things says. “Prakash Raj was initially reluctant to play Karunanidhi in Jayalalithaa’s biopic as he had played a similar character in Mani Ratnam’s Iruvar. However, Vijay was desparate to have him on board as he firmly believed that only he could pull the role with ease. In fact, Prakash Raj’s role is the heart of the film and he will be seen in four different looks.” It is also worth noting that the makers of Mani Ratnam’s 1997 hit film Iruvar never announced officially that the film was based on the life of MGR and Karunanidhi. However, both critics and the audience had pointed out real instances that were incorporated in the film.

Titled Thalaivi, the film is all set to go on floors post Deepavali. Major portions will be shot in Mysuru and Kangana has already begun preparing for the role.
