Paris Olympics 2024 Day 12 Highlights: Mirabai Chanu misses out on medal; Avinash Sable finishes 11th in steeplechase finals

CHENNAI: The Day 12 of the Paris Olympics wasn't as good as everyone would've thought considering the build up as Vinesh Phogat, was disqualified from the freestyle wrestling finals and missed out on medal.

And the dream of clinching second Olympic medal in weightlifting shredded as Mirabai Chanu finished fourth in the women's 49kg finals.

In steeplechase finals, Avinash Sable finished 11th in the 3000m event.

Following an euphoric Tuesday with Indian stars Neeraj Chopra and Vinesh Phogat qualifying to the finals, Day 12 of the Paris Olympics is lined up with several potential headline-making opportunities for the Indian contingents.

Wednesday's games will kick off with a medal match where Suraj Panwar and Priyanka Goswami will be in action in a mixed marathon race walk relay event, followed by Aditi and Diksha Dagar in women's golf stroke play round 1.

On the other hand, the Indian women's table tennis team led by Manika Batra will be up against Germany in the quarter-final. They defeated Romania 3-2 in round of 16, courtesy of Manika's two wins in singles contest.

But the event which the entire country is waiting for with bated breath is the finals of the women’s freestyle wrestling 50kg where ace wrestler Vinesh Phogat will have a faceoff against USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt for gold.

Vinesh is the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the finals at the Olympics with her convincing 5-0 win over Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, 2020 Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mirabai Chanu will take centre stage in the medal round of the women’s 49kg weightlifting event.

At midnight, Avinash Sable will feature in the finals of the 3000m steeplechase.

2.30 - Wrestling - Antim Panghal v Zeynep Yetgil women's freestyle 53 kg round of 16 match

If Antim advances, there'll be quarters and semis round thereafter later on Wednesday

10.45 - Athletics - Pravin Chithravel and Abdulla Aboobacker in men's triple jump qualification

11 pm - Weightlifting - Mirabai Chanu in women's 49 kg (Medal event)

12.30 onwards - Wrestling - Vinesh Phogat's medal match in women's 50 kg (medal rounds)

1.13 am - athletics - Avinash Sable 3000m steeplechase final (medal match)

Indian Wrestler Vinesh Phogat disqualified from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg for being overweight. 

It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. India placed at 24th after 24.4 km mark

India takes on Germany in the Women's team quarter-finals in just about 10 minutes. 

After defeating Romania 3-2, Manika Batra and Co is takes on fifth seeds Germany for a spot in the semis 

First up we have Sreeja Akula/Archana Girish Kamath go up against Yuan Wan/Shan Xiaona in doubles match

Sreeja Akula and Archana Girish Kamath started off great in the third game by pulling a lead of 5-2, unlike the previous two games were they were trailing in the initial stages. But the Germans came back strongly to win 12-10

Sreeja Akula and Archana Girish Kamath went down 6-11 in Game 5 to give them 0-1 lead in the quarter-finals 

Manika Batra takes on Annett Kaufmann 

Jyothi Yarraji finishes seventh in her Heat in 100m hurdles event clocking 13.16 secs.

 She has missed direct qualification today, she'll be back in repechage for a second chance tomorrow

The 18-year-old Annett Kaufmann showed great comeback after losing in the first game by winning game 2 in a dominant fashion.

India's Suraj Panwar and Priyanka Goswami failed to finish the race. 

It was a long game one between the experienced Shan Xiaona and Archana Girish Kamath which went into a tie breaker. Both players weren't backing out from the fight. But in the end, Archana took the game 19-17 and pumped with confidence going into the second game. 

The German dominated the second game leaving no room for Archana, who seemed to have exhausted from the previous game

Archana pulled off a great match against Shan Xiaona to help India stay in contention

Mirabai Chanu goes for a medal once again. She had won silver in Tokyo. 

Pravin Chithravel and Abdulla Aboobacker will be in action in the men's triple jump qualification event. 

Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mirabai Chanu will be in action. It's her birthday tomorrow, can she win a medal and start off early celebrations tonight?

 Both Praveen Chithravel and Abdulla Aboobacker registered 15.99 in their respective first attempts. 

Remember, 17.10m is the direct qualification mark. 

Mirabai Chanu has taken 200kg ( 90 in snatch + 110 Clean &Jerk ) as weight to start off

Every Weightlifter gets 3 chances to successfully lift a weight

 If Weightlifter lift successful she can try higher weights

If Weightlifter lift failed she will get 2 more chance to lift it

Participants who have selected lower weight as default will be taking attempts first

Mirabai Chanu was clinical in her first snatch attempt of 85kg as she easily lifted and move into joint lead in snatch with Piron Candelario.

Praveen Chithravel registers a distance of 16.21m in his third and final jump. Abdulla Aboobacker registers a 16.49m jump. They are positioned 26th and 21st overall.

Mirabai Chanu will be lifting 111kg in her first clean and jerk attempt
