TIRUNELVELI: Tension ensued after a man consumed pesticide inside the station premises in Kudankulam on Friday. Following the incident, Tirunelveli Superintendent of Police Vishwesh Balasubramanian Shastri suspended two police personnel attached to the Kudankulam police station for negligence of duty.

The man who consumed poison was identified as Ramesh Kumar (32), son of Subramanian of Kavalkinaru. His condition is stable, and he is undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital, Nagercoil.

Head Constable Sivakumar and Constable Veldurai found Ramesh Kumar under the influence of alcohol during a vehicle check and brought him to the police station for examination.

A police source said that Ramesh Kumar reportedly informed the Judicial Magistrate that he consumed the poison following a love failure

While the two policemen went inside the station to fetch the breathalyser, Ramesh Kumar allegedly took around 10 ml of pesticide from his bag and consumed it. The police immediately rushed him to the Kudankulam Government Hospital and later shifted him to the Government Medical College Hospital for further treatment.

A police source said that the two personnel were suspended for failing to check Ramesh Kumar when he was brought to the station, and pointed out that at least one police personnel should have remained with him.

The source further said that Ramesh Kumar reportedly informed the Judicial Magistrate that he consumed the poison following a love failure.

The police will take further action based on the report submitted by the Judicial Magistrate.
