Work initiated for Kuthambakkam terminus

A few months after it was announced in the State Assembly, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has invited consultants to prepare a feasibility report and to provide assistance in constructing the city’s fourth mofussil bus terminus near Thirumazhisai.

According to a CMDA official, the bus terminus would come up on an extent of 20 acres at Kuthambakkam village near the proposed satellite township at Thirumazhisai, off Chennai–Bengaluru National Highway.

“The new proposed bus terminus will house buses bound for western districts of the state. The bus terminus will be built in a phased manner at a cost of Rs 150 crore,” the official said.

Thirumazhisai Mofussil Bus Terminus would become the fourth mofussil terminus of the city after Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MGR Bus Terminus (Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus) in Koyambedu, Madhavaram Mofussil Bus Terminus and Kilambakkam Mofussil Bus Terminus. While the first two bus terminals are functioning, construction works for Kilambakkam Mofussil Bus Terminus are going on.

“The CMBT is functioning beyond its capacity with more congestion due to increasing number of buses and the absence of depot facility. Once the Thirumazhisai bus terminus is constructed, buses to western districts will be operated from there,” the official explained.

The CMBT has 180 active bus parking bays, 60 idle parking bays and separate parking area for city buses, while Madhavaram Mofussil Bus Terminus has 42 active bus bays and 50 idle bus bays.

The CMDA had already shifted northbound buses (towards Andhra Pradesh) to the recently-inaugurated Madhavaram Mofussil Bus Terminus.

Once the construction works of the Kilambakkam Mofussil Bus Terminus are completed, buses to the southern districts would be shifted to Kilambakkam.

During the first phase of the Thirumazhisai Mofussil Bus Terminus, terminal building with bus bays, public vehicle parking and MTC bus parking, idle parking and others would be taken up. After the first phase, facilities which are required for the State Transport Corporations such as depots and fuel filling would be taken up, the official said.

The CMDA would decide on the requirement of facilities such as number of bus bays, parking spaces and commercial hubs.
