CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Wednesday said that he could try to emulate the calmness and cool-headed nature of former Indian cricket captain 'Thala' Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Participating in an informal chit-chat with sportspersons, a video of which was shared on X, the Chief Minister answered questions ranging from sports to his childhood memories. Apart from politics, Stalin spoke at length about his early years and shared several light-hearted anecdotes.
When asked about his favourite sportsperson during his school days, Stalin said he admired Kapil Dev, recalling how he rose from humble beginnings to lead India to its first Cricket World Cup victory.
He also said he admired cricketing legends Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, and Dhoni.
Recalling his school days at MCC School in Chetpet, Stalin said hockey was his first sport and that he played for his school team. He added that he later developed a strong passion for cricket as well.
Speaking about his own cricketing experience, the Chief Minister said that during his younger days, he played street cricket as an off-spinner. He humorously recalled once bowling to his father, former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
Stalin also reminisced about playing “book cricket” during his childhood, explaining that scores were counted by turning pages of a book, with zero meaning the 'batsman' was out.
Entering politics at the age of 14, he said he had always faced pressure situations. He added that whenever he felt under pressure, he would listen to music, read books, and go for walks.
When asked about the character of former Indian cricket captain M.S. Dhoni, M.K. Stalin said he admired Dhoni’s captaincy and noted that he continues to guide others even today.
The moderator of the event and table tennis player Sharath Kamal asked Stalin to compare himself with Dhoni, particularly in terms of traits such as calmness and composure during difficult times. Responding with a smile, the Chief Minister said he could try to be like Dhoni.
